Developing with php
It is amazing how many of our customers are developers themselves. With this thought in mind, we thought many of you might be interested in what we discovered recently.

Our development machines have primarily been Win XP machines. Until recently, we had held off on converting many of our ideas into working php scripts. We knew we needed to institute a secure area on our site to deliver software updates to our customers. This meant that eventually we had to move to a php/MySql system. I can't count the number of times we struggled to get our windows machines to mimic the Linux machines that our server uses.

This meant that we had to first install Apache on windows, then get php and MySql installed and working together. This usually meant spending anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days getting the system to work.

We recently ran across an open source solution that put us to shame. I think you could say that most of us here at NativeWinds are fairly technically minded. This open source solution managed to do in 60 seconds what it was taking us up to two days to accomplish.

We started with a clean install of an XP, sp2 machine. Then we downloaded wamp and ran the installer. In about a minute, our XP machine was turned into a full development machine which had, Apache, php, MySql and phpMyAdmin installed and ready to run and the wamp server was online.

That went so well that I decided to try it on our new Win7 machine. Just to be on the safe side, I right-clicked on the wamp executable and ran the installer as Administrator. Less that 60 seconds later, the Win7 machine was setup and ready to act as a full development machine including the wamp Apache server.

If any of you are interested in our find, go to http://www.wampserver.com/en/ and take a look. We think you'll be as impressed as we were!
